The Zanerian Manual: 140-Page Printable Lettering Book

$12.00

A masterwork of American ornamental penmanship to print and practice from home.

Discover one of the greatest collections of American calligraphy and ornamental lettering ever published. The Zanerian Manual of Alphabets and Engrossing combines detailed instruction by the eminent penman E. A. Lupfer with specimens from more than two dozen professional calligraphers, engrossers, and lettering artists.

I restored its 140 pages from public domain photographs of a historical copy, transforming them into high-resolution, crisp black-and-white pages you can zoom into super closely and print at home for study and practice. The result is a clean, faithful reproduction that preserves the character of the original 1918 printing while making its exquisite exemplars accessible for modern study and practice.

Learn how to write dozens of decorative alphabets

This manual famously covers American Engrosser’s Script, Roundhand, and Engraver’s Script, but also includes an extraordinary range of historical lettering and decorative styles: ornamental calligraphy, monograms, flourished capitals, Roman lettering, Old English, Gothic styles, engrossed diplomas, title pages, borders, signage, and pen-and-ink portraiture.

First published in an earlier form as The Zanerian Alphabets in 1895, the manual was enlarged several times before this expanded edition appeared in 1918. More than a century later, it remains one of the most comprehensive and beloved guides to the golden age of American penmanship.

Tips for Printing & Binding This Digital Book

To print some or all the pages for ink-on-paper calligraphy practice, see my tips below. (But first: if you want all the pages printed and bound, you might instead consider buying the print edition of this book—available in perfect-bound softcover and sturdy hardcover with single-sided printing on beautiful cream paper.)

  • Printing on U.S. Letter paper: Select Actual Size or 100% in your printer settings.

  • Printing on A4 paper: Select Fit, Fit to Printable Area, or Shrink Oversized Pages in your printer settings.

  • Paper type: I recommend smooth, uncoated white or cream paper. See my blog post on The Best Calligraphy Practice Papers to learn my recommendations for printing practice pages at home.

  • Send to a local printer: Send the PDF to a local print shop to print the pages single-sided and punch them for a ring binder. The benefit of this method is that you can keep the pages together in order, but also remove individual pages for practicing plates whenever you wish.

Also ideal for digital calligraphy practice

You may intend to practice from this PDF edition digitally, by loading it onto your tablet for on-screen practice with a stylus. Or you may simply want to explore the detailed plates on a computer screen.

Once downloaded, the high-resolution PDF pages can be imported into any art-making app or software. My top recommendation is Procreate for iPad, but other options include Affinity Designer and Adobe Photoshop.

To practice from this digital book in Procreate:

  1. Import the entire PDF into Procreate, or extract individual PDF pages and import them one at a time as needed. Each imported page will open as a separate canvas. (Learn how to upload files to Procreate here.)

  2. Lower the opacity of the imported artwork layer so the calligraphy is still visible but light enough to trace over.

  3. Add a new, blank layer above the imported artwork layer. Trace the calligraphy on this new layer rather than drawing directly on the original.

  4. Zoom in as needed—these pages are very high resolution!—and use a pressure-sensitive calligraphy brush for the best results. I’ve designed lots of Procreate calligraphy brushes specifically for this kind of practice, like my Ultimate Lettering & Calligraphy Procreate Kit and my Calligraphy Nibs Procreate Brush Pack.

  5. Learn more about Procreate calligraphy on my blog, including my favorite iPad lettering tools, and my top tips for mastering Procreate calligraphy. I also have dozens of short (and free) video tutorials on iPad calligraphy and more in-depth digital hand lettering courses on Skillshare.
