Outside Voice Handwriting Font Family
Outside Voice Handwriting Font Family
Outside Voice is a handwritten, all-caps typeface, created as an homage to the robust history of handwritten protest signs. It's a beautiful display font for a huge range of projects, from poster art to holiday cards.
➺ Alternate cycling
With contextual alternates enabled, this font will automatically cycle through three sets of handwritten alphabets as you type. The result is type that looks as imperfect and handmade as a digital font can get. This makes Outside Voice a wonderful choice for pairing with hand-drawn illustrations. Consider varying the size, slant, and/or color of each line in your layouts. These adjustments make Outside Voice look even more handmade and organic, which is great for fun designs like posters and quotes.
➺ Ligatures and languages
This typeface is quirky and ligature-rich, with over 600 glyphs and icons. It supports Latin and Modern Greek alphabets, and includes all European language diacritical markings. The family consists of four fonts: regular, regular italic, medium, medium italic, and outline.
It includes a set of decorated word ligatures comprised of common protest words like 'peace,' 'vote', and 'yes!'. You'll also get the separate ornament components so you can create all the decorated words you want! Additionally, you'll get a full set of common protest icons, such as a raised fist, planet, dove, and peace sign.
➺ Open Type Features
To get the most out of Outside Voice, it is best to use software that supports Open Type fonts (Adobe programs, Corel Draw, Affinity Designer, etc). This type family has tons of built-in OpenType ligatures and alternates, which are what make it so customizable and decorative. The most is the contextual alternates, so be sure to turn those on! This is what turns on the cycling between the three alphabet sets. You can always access the ligatures, alternates, and icons through your software's glyphs panel. (If you don't know how to use open type with your software, this is a great guide, but Google and YouTube are great resources, too.)

➺ A font for a cause
On June 20, 2020, I donated 100% of the proceeds from the first eight days of Outside Voice’s release to Black Artists + Designers Guild. (You can read more about why I chose BADG as the recipient here.) Thank you to everyone to supported this fundraiser! Together, we were able to give $570 to this great organization.
Outside Voice is an homage to the long, robust history of handwritten protest signs. This is a project I've wanted to pursue for a long time because I'm genuinely obsessed with homemade poster lettering and the unique energy it conveys. The filled-in capital letters of varying widths and heights. The off-kilter slants. The bleeding marker strokes. The lines that squish up to the edge of the poster board and get smaller and smaller to squeeze in. The simple drawings that convey the message at a glance. The anger and the sadness, the love and the unity.
As much as I love calligraphy, it's not calligraphy that captures the authentic emotion of a crowd of voices rising up in protest. There is value in polished, 'perfect' letters, but equal value in unpolished, imperfect ones. That raw humanity is what I've embraced with this project.
