Faux Calligraphy for Absolute Beginners ✨ Live Zoom Class ✨ Learn How to Draw Script with Any Pen
Live Zoom Class – 1.5 Hours
Saturday, April 26, 2025
12:00–1:30 pm EST / 9:00–10:30 am PST
(Find your time zone here.)
No experience or special tools required—just a pencil, pen, and paper!
Are you completely new to calligraphy? Don’t have fancy tools yet, or maybe you’re not quite ready for dip pens or iPad lettering? This live class is for you.
In this 1.5-hour beginner-friendly Zoom workshop, I’ll teach you the beautiful basics of faux calligraphy: a simple, elegant lettering method that mimics traditional calligraphy using nothing more than a regular pen or pencil. It’s a perfect starting point to learn calligraphy (without the messy ink!) or for doing calligraphy on-the-go.
Before class, I’ll email you printable calligraphy guide sheets to use during our session. All you need to bring to class is a pencil and a pen—nothing fancy!
What you’ll learn:
How faux calligraphy works
The essential strokes used in every script alphabet
A full lowercase alphabet in a simple, modern calligraphy style
How to draw thick and thin strokes using any writing tool
Lettering fundamentals like italic slant, spacing, and stroke order
How to follow calligraphy guides, i.e. what all those lines actually mean!
Supplies you’ll need:
1 pen (any kind will do—I recommend a fine ballpoint)
1 pencil
1 eraser (even the one attached to your pencil will work!)
Printed worksheets (I’ll email them to you before class for you to print)
The Zoom app and video camera (you will receive a Zoom link to join via email before class. You don’t need to film your hands for this class—just join with your face!)
This will be a relaxed and encouraging space to explore lettering step-by-step. Whether you're starting from zero or just want to build your confidence, you’ll leave with a new skill you can use for journaling, addressing envelopes, art, or just for fun.
Absolutely no lettering experience needed. You’ll be amazed what you can create with just a pen!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the format of the class?
This is a live Zoom video call. You’ll need to install Zoom in advance (the free version is perfect) and have a webcam. The class will work just like a regular video meeting—no special camera setup is needed. You’ll just watch and draw along with me. You don’t need to film your hands or share your screen.
Will I be able to see your hands during the class?
Yes! You’ll be able to see both me and a close-up view of my hands while I’m drawing. I use a dual-camera setup during Zoom classes so you can clearly watch every stroke as I demonstrate each letter.
Is the ticket refundable?
No, tickets are non-refundable. Please double-check your availability before booking!
Will there be a video replay available after the class?
No, this is a live event only. The class will not be recorded or available to watch afterward, so be sure you can attend live.
What kind of pen do I need? Do I need a calligraphy pen?
No special tools required! You’ll just need a regular pen—like a ballpoint or a fine, stiff felt-tip pen. No need for a calligraphy pen, brush pen, or fountain pen.
What about the pencil? Any special kind?
Any standard pencil will work just fine! No need for anything fancy.
Will I need to print anything before class?
Yes. I’ll email you PDF worksheets a few days before class. Please print them out ahead of time so you can follow along. (A black & white printout is perfect.)
Will I be able to ask questions during the class?
Yes! I’ll save time for Q&A at the end of the class. I’ll try to answer as many as possible!
Do I need to have any calligraphy experience?
Not at all! This class is specifically for total beginners. If you've never tried calligraphy before, this is a perfect starting point.
Can kids attend? What’s the recommended age?
This class is beginner-friendly and totally fine for teens and adults. It’s not designed specifically for young children, but older kids with an interest in lettering are absolutely welcome.
I don’t live in the U.S. How do I know what time the class is in my country?
You can use this link to convert the class time to your local time zone: Time Zone Converter. Make sure you are converting to your time zone from 12:00 pm EST time (New York time) on April 26, 2025.
