Smitten on Paper

In July, I taught an Intermediate Modern Calligraphy workshop at Smitten on Paper (Monrovia, California). What a stunning space! I was blown away by the beautiful Saturday sunlight that poured in through their wall of windows. It was the perfect, peaceful spot for this class of eighteen to learn the ins and outs of pointed pen modern calligraphing with gouache. We worked with white gouache on black paper, green gouache on white paper, and practiced varying letterforms in a range of modern styles.

Molly Suber Thorpe

A calligrapher, teacher, and author, Molly’s work spans both modern lettering and historical script. She writes about calligraphy and handwriting as creative disciplines—shaped by tools, technique, habit, and attention—and considers what it means to write by hand in a digital age. In addition to designing custom lettering for clients, she creates books, free resources, and online classes for people who want to develop their calligraphy and handwriting, whether as a creative outlet, a professional skill, or both.
